Reloads
Reload Fundamentals — dry fire drill
Setup
Stand at ready with an empty magazine in a cleared training gun and a spare on your belt.
Reload Fundamentals is one of the reload drills with the biggest impact on overall stage time in dynamic/practical shooting. We split the motion into clear phases — drop, reach, index (the same path every time), insert, grip (rebuilding the firing grip), and target (eyes back on target). Key principle: your eyes don't need to stay on the gun the whole time.
Step by step
Drop the empty magazine.
Reach for the fresh one.
Index it — the same path into the well every time.
Insert and seat it firmly.
Rebuild a full firing grip.
Bring your eyes back to the target.
Coaching cues
Common mistakes
Staring at the gun for the entire reload.
Losing the full grip after seating the magazine.
The magazine following a different path each time.
Dry-fire safety
Perform this drill only with a cleared, unloaded firearm, after checking the chamber, with ammunition removed from the room, aimed in a safe direction. See our full safety checklist on the dry fire training page.
