Change Gears — vision & tempo dry fire drill

6 minIntermediateDeliberately matching tempo to target difficultyDRY FIRE
BigMediumSmall

Setup

Three differently sized targets (big, medium, small) side by side.

Change Gears is a vision-and-tempo drill that teaches one of the most important skills in dynamic/practical shooting: deliberately matching your tempo to what each target demands. Not every target deserves the same tempo — a big, close target can be engaged fast, a small or difficult one needs you to slow down and confirm the sight picture. Important note: we do not present any specific time here as a universal IPSC standard — this is a personal progression tool.

Step by step

1

Engage the big target at a fast, confident tempo (FAST).

2

Move to the medium target and ease off, confirming the sight picture (CONTROLLED).

3

Move to the small target and slow down as needed, waiting for a clean sight picture (PRECISE).

Coaching cues

FAST on the big target.CONTROLLED on the medium one.PRECISE on the small one.

Common mistakes

×

Using the same tempo on every target regardless of difficulty.

×

Being overly cautious on an easy target (wasted time).

×

Rushing a hard target (lost precision).

Dry-fire safety

Perform this drill only with a cleared, unloaded firearm, after checking the chamber, with ammunition removed from the room, aimed in a safe direction. See our full safety checklist on the dry fire training page.
