Position Entry & Exit
Position Exit — dry fire drill
Setup
Stand in a shooting position with a target in front and a marked exit direction.
Position exit teaches leaving a shooting position smoothly right after the last target — without lingering, but never at the cost of the last shot's quality. Many shooters lose valuable fractions of a second standing still after the last hit. The body should start moving toward the exit during confirmation of the last shot, not after.
Step by step
Engage the last target.
Confirm the sight picture / hit.
The body starts moving toward the exit during that confirmation.
Accelerate out as soon as you're confident in the last shot.
Coaching cues
Common mistakes
An unnecessary pause after the last engagement.
Moving before the last engagement is actually complete.
Losing balance on an abrupt start.
Dry-fire safety
Perform this drill only with a cleared, unloaded firearm, after checking the chamber, with ammunition removed from the room, aimed in a safe direction. See our full safety checklist on the dry fire training page.
