Position Entry & Exit
Position Entry — dry fire drill
Setup
Set a start point 2–3 m from a marked shooting position (e.g. floor tape) with a visible target.
Position entry is one of the elements that most separates an experienced dynamic/practical shooter from a beginner. The key mistake to avoid: "stop first, then start preparing the gun." Done correctly, the gun and eyes start preparing for the target while still decelerating — not after coming to a full stop.
Step by step
Accelerate toward the position.
Begin decelerating in the final phase.
Start bringing the gun up while still decelerating — don't wait until you stop.
Arrive with stable sights.
Engage the target immediately after arriving.
Coaching cues
Common mistakes
Starting to brake too late.
Bringing the gun up only after coming to a stop.
An unstable, wobbly final step.
Dry-fire safety
Perform this drill only with a cleared, unloaded firearm, after checking the chamber, with ammunition removed from the room, aimed in a safe direction. See our full safety checklist on the dry fire training page.
