Setup

Small target on a wall, safe direction, 2–4 m of clear space with no obstacles in the movement path.

Smooth Movement is a foundational movement drill in dynamic/practical shooting. Sometimes informally called "foxtrot" or smooth walk, though that is not an official IPSC technique name. Legs and hips drive the movement while the upper body, arms and sights stay as stable as possible. In dry fire you train this without the pressure of a live shot — the goal is a calm sight picture while walking, not speed.

Step by step

1

Build a stable grip, bring your eyes and sights onto the target.

2

Soften your knees — this absorbs vertical bounce.

3

Begin a calm walk forward, minimizing vertical movement in the upper body.

4

Watch the front sight or dot — if it bounces, slow down.

5

Only increase pace once the sight picture stays stable.

6

Repeat backward, lateral and diagonal.
